A strong Extended Essay is not just a long paper. It needs a question that can be answered, evidence that is interpreted, and an argument that develops rather than repeats the topic.
EE revision checklist
- The research question appears early and still matches the actual essay.
- The introduction explains why the investigation is narrow enough to answer.
- Each body section contributes to the answer, not only to background knowledge.
- Sources are used to prove, compare, challenge, or refine claims.
- Important evidence is interpreted in the student's own reasoning.
- The essay acknowledges limits in the evidence or method where they matter.
- The conclusion answers the research question without introducing a new essay.
- Formatting, citations, and presentation support the argument instead of distracting from it.
Three common EE risks
Sources are dropped in, not used
A quotation or data point should do work in the argument. Explain what it proves and what it cannot prove.
The draft describes more than it argues
Critical thinking appears when the essay makes judgments about evidence, method, interpretation, and uncertainty.
